are the perfect option for raised print with an indented back (called a bruise) due to a metal plate.  Engraving usually has ink pressed into the paper where embossing usually has an inkless imprint best suited for monograms, borders, and other design effects.

letterpress $$$

Indents into the paper on the front and is slightly raised on the back.   Letterpress is usually paired with soft cotton stock so the ink is absorbed and gives a timeless and vintage look.  This is a labor-intensive method in which text or an image is etched in reverse (think: mirror image) on a raised surface (typically a plate) and coated with ink to produce a physical impression on the paper.

 

thermography $$$ and screen-printing $$

Both provide a raised front that you can feel with a smooth back.  

Thermography uses heat to “melt” ink and glue onto the paper.  The finished product is shiny/plastic copy.  Silk screen printing uses a mesh-based stencil to apply ink onto the paper. It is also slightly raised over the paper to the touch but is not quite as pronounced as thermography. However, this process creates beautiful invitations and one of a kind sheen.  A number of different types of inks can be used as part of the silkscreen process including light or metallic colors to be printed on darker materials.

Foil stamping provides shinny, metallic, sharp impressions for copy, design or on an edge.  It is a great way to add elegance and pizazz.

 

uv printing $$$

UV is a newer technology that provides a shinny/wet look on raised letters or perfect for backgrounds and thematic invitations.

 

uv glitter thermography $$$

UV Glitter thermography is a perfect option for those that desire raised glitter copy or detail.  It comes in any color and shines just like glitter paper.

digital or flat printing $

for image-driven or ombre/shading/multiple color invitations, this budget-friendly flat digital printing is a great option. It is 100% smooth on the front or back.  Don’t confuse professional flat printing with inkjet or even laser printing with non-commercial equipment as it provides high-quality digital pressing.
